About Chibobo

Chibobo

The district of Chibobo is located approximately 450 kms north of Lusaka, Zambia's capital city. It is 10 kms west of the main north-south highway, on a dirt track. The closest town is Serenje, which is 30 kms north of Chibobo. (For more information on the physical geography of Chibobo please visit the Beginning to Understand Zambia and Chibobo page).

Several hundred people live in the district. Five hundred and twelve children (aged from about 5 to 15) are enrolled in the Chibobo Basic School. One hundred and twenty eight of these children are orphans, many of whom live at the Chibobo Orphanage.

The Orphanage is run by the Help Ministries Project (HMP) Management Team. Whilst there is a vehicle at the Orphanage, locals in need of medical assistance generally cannot easily access it. Apart from the Medical Clinic being constructed near the Basic School, the closest medical facility is located in Serenje.

To learn more you can download the site plan of Chibobo, details about its buildings, and the Medical Clinic's floorplan. Also available is a set of data collected on site in July 2005 about power usage at Chibobo. Electricity is provided by a diesel powered generator which works for a number of hours and supplies a limited number of appliances and lights. The Orphanage could accommodate children more comfortably if cheaper electricity became available to operate appliances that help with lighting, cooking and pumping water.
